Elizabeth Zamets
Biography and Artist’s Statement
I am a Los Angeles–based painter and illustrator interested in the tender, complicated, and deeply personal aspects of the human psyche. My work explores the inner workings of the mind and the symbolic ways that intimate, often difficult emotions can be translated into visual form. I am particularly drawn to the intertwining of vulnerability and connection, longing and attachment, grief and love.
I love investigating the formal qualities of the world and of people, often approaching them in an emblematic or heightened way. Through color, form, exaggeration, distortion, and intensity, I try to create images that feel psychologically charged; personal enough to come from a specific experience, but open enough for viewers to recognize something of themselves within them. I am interested in the moment when an image can communicate something that language cannot quite articulate: a feeling that is at once intimate, strange, and universal.
